Ford Bronco: How Early Year Value Carries Over Into Later Year Models

Classic Trends - March 18, 2021

Ford Broncos are one of the most loved and popular classic cars making the demand for them extremely high. Broncos have been the focal point of the collector truck/SUV market over the past few years, as they are a staple of today’s vintage car culture. The value of early year models of Broncos carries over into later year models. With the new release of the 2021 Ford Bronco, we want to take a look at past generations of the Ford Bronco.

The first-generation Broncos are the originals that everyone tends to want. According to Hagerty, of all Bronco generations, the first generation is by far the most popular among collectors, which has driven values to nearly double between 2016 and 2019. The original Bronco didn’t undergo many changes from beginning to the end of this time frame, other than engine specification. This generation of the Ford Bronco was built on a chassis not shared with any other Ford vehicle. This model tends to have the highest value of classic Broncos today, because they tend to be the most desireable, and can set enthusiasts back $80,000 at its peak. Hagerty states that the first-gen Bronco is likely to remain the leader of the truck and SUV popularity stampede for the foreseeable future. Second-Generation: 1978-1979 Bronco

The second-generation Ford Bronco was only offered for two model years. This Bronco was larger than the original, and borrowed its platform from the Ford F-100 pickup. According to Automobile Mag, the second-generation Bronco ditched the inline six, offering instead two V-8 engine options, in 351-ci or 400-ci capacity. Custom and Ford Ranger XLT trims were sold, but don't really seem to affect values much. Second-generation Broncos are not a common sight but they are appreciated by collectors. At one point, these SUVs were very affordable, but in recent months values have increased dramatically.

Third-Generation: 1980-1986 Bronco

The third-generation Ford Bronco includes an uplifted suspension and, by 1985, fuel injection. While the Bronco continued to share its bones with the F-series pickup chassis, two engines were updated. The national gas crisis was not too far behind when this generation arrived on the scene. The third-generation Bronco is still quite affordable today.

Fourth-Generation: 1987-1991 Bronco

In 1987, slight changes were made to the Ford Bronco. Some of the rough lines were smoothed out and there were some design updates made to refine the appearance and to create aerodynamic efficiency. Trim levels remained the same as the previous model. The three-speed engine was replaced with an automatic four-speed, for improved driveability, performance and efficiency. This generation appeals to collectors who want 4x4 trucks that can perform reliably under a variety of conditions.

Fifth-Generation: 1992-1996 Bronco

The fifth-generation Broncos was introduced in 1992 with changes to the body style. According to Hagerty, the fifth-gen Broncos have enjoyed a huge leap in popularity and value recently. This generation is slightly more valuable than the previous two. It is also known as O.J. Simpson’s SUV of choice, following a low speed police chase (in a 1993 model).
