Ford began producing the Mustang in March of 1964. Since then they have been very popular among car lovers. The Mustang was co-designed by John Najjar and Philip Clark beginning in 1961.It was created with high attention to style and detail. It was designed as a sporty, muscle car and would draw the eye of the public with it’s long hood and short deck. Ford had the formal debut for the Mustang at the United States Grand Prix in New York on October 7, 1962.

The First Generation

The first generation of the car was made between 1965 and 1973 but before it was officially introduced to the market, it had already undergone a number of design and name changes. They were doing market research to determine if the car should have two or four seats, and the overall design of the car. When they were first introduced to the market for $2,368, over 22,000 were sold the first weekend and the following was another 400,000 just in the first year. But as the design shifted from year to year, not all of them were successes. The style of the car from 1971 to 1973 was not popular among consumers, some noting that the car began to look lazy and fat.

The Second Generation

This is when the second generation made an appearance. The group of cars made between 1974 and 1978 was introduced shortly before the oil crisis and sales were skyrocketing. Ford was offering luxury upgrade packages, new design features and even better contents under the hood.

The Third Generation

From 1979 until 1993, the third generation of Mustangs were sold. They were larger to accommodate for more room for the passengers and came with new body styles and had other major restyles during that era as well.

The Fourth Generation

The fourth generation of the Ford Mustang was from 1994-2004. There was yet another bug shift in the style of the car that looked different from what the original car offered, it had a more rounded look and for the first time it no longer was available as a notchback.

The Fifth Generation

Then from 2005 to 2014 the fifth generation was introduced with a sleek new retro-futurism design as Ford’s senior VP of design noted.

The Current Generation

Finally we have the most current generation which dates from 2015 to present. These vehicles feature the latest technology and features. With this said the Ford Mustang has been around for a long time because it’s loved by so many consumers. The first two generations of the Ford Mustang created a legacy in the automotive industry.

There is a reason you still see so many classic Mustangs on the road today. They are one of the most reliable classic cars out there. As with any older vehicle, there needs to be proper maintenance and upkeep. How well you maintain your car will determine its reliability. The better condition you keep your Mustang in, the better it will keep you safe on the road. While claiming that they’re the most reliable car on the road today might be a bit of a stretch, they are usually very drivable and safe, even when they are not in pristine condition.

The other thing to note is that some years and models of the Mustang were made more reliable than others based on design changes, different parts and unique styles.
